Hanoi flower growers rush to prepare for Lunar New Year demand

With the Lunar New Year (Tet) fast approaching, flower growers in Hanoi’s Tay Tuu village have been extremely busy in recent days taking care of their gardens in preparation for Tet - the country’s biggest holiday of the year.

In Hanoi’s Tay Tuu village, the capital’s largest flower-growing hub, farmers are working at full throttle, carefully tending and harvesting blooms to meet surging demand ahead of the Tet holiday.

At night, the flower fields are brightly lit, an important cultivation technique that accelerates growth and enhances nutrient content, contributing to better-quality flowers.

Nguyen Thien Tan, a local villager, says keeping the lights on throughout the night is a technique used to ensure flowers bloom right in time for the Tet holiday, while also improving their size and overall quality.

In Tay Tuu flower village, storms and flooding in 2025 have damaged large swathes of flowers intended for the Tet market, forcing many growers to shift production plans and replant for a new crop in the second lunar month of the year.

Tan says that severe flooding had disrupted production, leaving many flowers unable to bloom in time for Tet. As a result, growers are keeping the lights on overnight to nurture a new crop, which is expected to flower after the Lunar New Year.

For many years, flower cultivation has provided additional income, helping local farmers significantly improve their living standards.

Flowers are carefully handled through days and nights in order to ensure that they bloom beautifully just in time for Tet.

Chrysanthemums are among the most popular flowers grown in Tay Tuu village.

In recent years, growers have also introduced new, higher-value flower varieties, including dahlias, to cater to consumer taste during the Tet holiday.
