Ministry of Health intervenes in case of obstetrician accusing Central Maternity Hospital of negligence

Regarding the press information, about the story of pregnant woman QA shared on social networks, reflecting on the responsibility of some doctors during the treatment process at the Central Maternity Hospital, on February 22, 2025, the leader of the Department of Maternal and Child Health (Ministry of Health) said that there was a document directing and requesting the Central Maternity Hospital to inspect, verify and report the incident in detail.

The Department of Maternal and Child Health (Ministry of Health) has just sent a dispatch requesting the Central Maternity Hospital to verify and report the medical incident involving pregnant woman QA (born in 1997, in Bac Giang).

The Ministry of Health requested the Central Maternity Hospital to urgently review the medical examination and treatment process for Ms. QA at the hospital, providing full information to patients and the mass media. At the same time, it is necessary to review the promulgation and implementation of professional procedures in medical examination and treatment at the hospital to promptly correct any shortcomings (if any).

Previously, social media was abuzz with the story of a pregnant woman's family accusing the doctor at the Central Maternity Hospital of negligence, causing the mother to give birth prematurely and the baby to die a few days later.

According to the report, the pregnant woman QA had her cervix cerclage done due to a short cervix at 20 weeks of pregnancy. At 24 weeks, she had abdominal pain and was admitted to the emergency room at Bac Giang Provincial Hospital. She was diagnosed with labor pains but had not yet given birth and was assigned to be an inpatient.

However, because her condition did not improve and she still had severe abdominal pain, she was transferred to the Central Maternity Hospital on the second day of Tet. On the third day of Tet, Ms. A. was still quite comfortable during the day, but at night, she had excruciating pain every 5 minutes.

"The pain was unbearable for my wife, so she called the emergency room and the doctor advised her to get Tractocile (9 IVs for 2 days at a cost of 22 million VND) to get through the entire Tet holiday.

On February 3 (the 6th day of Tet), Ms. QA had many pain attacks, 5 minutes each, with a lot of mucus and pink blood. On the evening of the 7th day of Tet, she continuously had unbearable contractions. She even wet the bed like her water broke, and had to wear diapers.

On the morning of February 5 (the 8th day of Tet), although the pain had subsided, Ms. QA still had a lot of bleeding. At this time, Ms. QA requested to be transferred to another hospital.

On the afternoon of February 6 (the 9th day of Tet), right after being transferred to Hanoi Obstetrics Hospital, the doctor concluded that Ms. QA had low amniotic fluid, the amniotic fluid was cloudy like meat juice, and if it was any later, her uterus would have been damaged.

At 9 pm that same day, although the doctors tried their best to save the baby, Ms. QA still gave birth prematurely. The baby was infected with the mother despite the doctors' dedicated treatment. At 3 am on February 20, the baby died.

The family of the pregnant woman said that some doctors of the Central Obstetrics Hospital team had shown signs of negligence in the process of monitoring and treating her.

Regarding the incident, Professor, Doctor. Nguyen Duy Anh - Director of the Central Obstetrics Hospital, informed: "The hospital and doctors sympathize and share the loss of the patient's family. The board of directors has checked and reviewed the examination and treatment process, and the hospital doctors have treated according to the protocol, without any "irresponsibility" as the patient reported. The hospital has reviewed the process, the doctors have examined correctly and have reported to the Ministry of Health.

"The patient's fetus was too premature, only 25 weeks. The doctors used the best medicine to keep the baby for the mother. However, with the initial prognosis being very difficult, the hospital tried its best. This was a difficult case, the fetus was premature, the hospital did not have amniotic fluid infusion, the Hanoi Obstetrics Hospital had, so the mother was later transferred to the Hanoi Obstetrics Hospital. The doctors all sympathized with the family...", Doctor Nguyen Duy Anh said.

Currently, the Central Obstetrics Hospital has quickly reported to The Ministry of Health will continue to review and complete detailed reports to send to management levels./.
